The UK government is committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. As a result, the long-term future of both gas and oil boilers, which are powered by fossil fuels, is uncertain. Heating our homes and workplaces accounts for around 25% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions, so our heating needs to be decarbonised and oil & gas boilers phased out.
Over four million homes in Great Britain are off-grid – if you live in one of these and rely on oil for your central heating, you may be wondering when oil boilers will be banned. There is no need to worry about replacing your oil boiler at this stage. Currently, the installation of new oil boilers will only be banned from 2035 onwards. There are also alternative fuels being developed (HVO) which can be used in existing oil boilers with a few adjustments, so you should be able to continue using your current oil-fired heating system for its full lifespan.
