In Autumn 2024, Grant UK unveiled their brand new range of air source heat pumps – the Aerona 290 – which is their fifth generation of heat pump. The Grant Aerona 290 heat pump is incredibly high performing, offering homeowners with an efficient, reliable and low carbon central heating solution for their homes. BRC Heating & Plumbing Ltd have been installing Grant heat pumps for many years and can offer you a quotation for fitting one of the latest Aerona 290 heat pumps at your property.

How does the Aerona 290 heat pump work?
The Aerona 290 is an R290 heat pump which means it uses R290 refrigerant, rather than R32 refrigerant which is typically used in air source heat pumps. R290 refrigerant is a more environmentally friendly refrigerant because it has a significantly lower Global Warming Potential value in comparison to other refrigerant types. What this means is R290 refrigerant remains in the atmosphere for less time and therefore has less warming impact on the earth’s atmosphere so an R290 heat pump is more sustainable than a heat pump using R32 or R410a refrigerant.
A heat pump using R290 works in the same way as a heat pump that uses R32 refrigerant. Grant’s Aerona 290 is an air-to-water heat pump which captures the heat energy from the air outside your home and converts this into useable heat energy that can warm up your rooms and provide hot water to your taps. The infographic below explains how a heat pump works:

Inside the heat pump, the R290 refrigerant enters a cycle of changing from a liquid state to a gas state and then back to a liquid again. Air is drawn into the heat pump and in the evaporator, the R290 refrigerant is exposed to the air where the refrigerant boils off to a gas and it is in this state that it absorbs the heat energy from the air. As a gas, the R290 refrigerant is then compressed in the heat pump’s compressor where the heat content is further increased before the gas passes through the heat exchanger. Here, the R290 gas condenses back to a liquid and as it does, it transfers its heat into the water in the heating system. The R290 refrigerant then re-circulates inside the heat pump and the cycle is repeated.
